Australian Citizenship
Becoming an Australian citizen is a significant milestone. We provide expert guidance on eligibility, residency requirements, and the application process to ensure a smooth transition to citizenship.

Citizenship by Conferral
Most permanent residents apply for citizenship by conferral. To qualify, you must generally meet the following residency requirements:
- Have lived in Australia on a valid visa for at least 4 years.
- Have been a permanent resident for at least the last 12 months.
- Have not been away from Australia for more than 12 months in the last 4 years.
- Have not been away from Australia for more than 90 days in the last 12 months.
Additional criteria include being of good character (for those 18+) and demonstrating a close connection to Australia.
Citizenship by Descent
If you were born outside Australia and at least one parent was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth, you may be eligible for citizenship by descent.
- General Eligibility: Born overseas on or after 26 January 1949 to an Australian citizen parent.
- Pre-1949 Births: Specific pathways exist for those born before 1949 to parents who became citizens at the commencement of the Citizenship Act.
- Parental Residency: If the parent acquired citizenship by descent, they must have resided in Australia for at least 2 years.
